Pronunciation of year in English/英文年份的念法

英文年份的念法應該很簡單是吧,但沒有事情是絕對是簡單的,哈,至少在我拜訪google大神之後,發現原來native speakers對年份的念法也有很多不一樣的意見。

一般認為,年份的念法沒有一個絕對的規則,大部分都同意讓數字能夠簡單被聽懂是最大的重點(這個跟我認知English native speaker偏好簡短精確的用字相符),舉例來說,1000-1999通常兩位-兩位數字念:

1919: nineteen nineteen (one thousand nine hundred nineteen-少見)
1902: nineteen (and) two or nineteen o two (很多人覺得用o取代zero不符合文法,但已經有越來越多人覺得這個用法沒有問題)

但是:
1900: nineteen hundred (one thousand nine hundred-少見)

另外,year 2001-2009念法多按一般數字方式(the same as 1000-1009):

2001: two thousand (and) one (twenty and one- 少見)
1009: one thousand (and) nine (ten and one- 少見)

但是:
2000: two thousand or 2K (twenty hundred-少見)

2010之後,目前兩字元和一般數字念法都還蠻常見:

2011: twenty eleven or two thousand (and) eleven
2018: twenty eighteen or two thousand (and) eighteen

Additional note:
有些人認為2011/two thousand (and) eleven加上and,是英式用法,美式多習慣不加and,但這個說法好像有很多不一樣的意見,有些美國人也習慣加上and,但不管如何,有沒有加上and都是可以的。

Except vs. except for

Except vs. except for用法的差別,雖然很用力的請教google大神,但還是沒有很確定的答案,先跟大家分享一下目前覺得比較make sense的分別方式,如果有更好的解釋,歡迎大家提供囉:

(1) except/except for (整體裡除了....)
Everyone was invited to the party except (for) Mary.

(2) except for (were it not for)
I would have arrived the restaurant on time except for the busy traffic.

Additional note:
以上只是except一部分的用法,其他部分需要另外查詢字典囉。

There be vs. have/有

There be vs. have/有,There be 多用在「存在」,have/has 用在「所有/屬關係」:

I have a bicycle.

Additional note:
(1)There are four rooms in the building.
(2)The building has four rooms.
以上兩種說法都是可以的,但(1)重點放在room/房間,(2)重點放在building/建築。

Mediterranean(a.n.)/地中海(的)

Mediterranean(a.n.)/地中海(的):

We plan to visit the Mediterranean region this summer.

On my mind:
"Mediterranean" is another word that I used to have difficulty of spelling it. The trick to memorize it is to divide the word according to the syllables: me-di-te-rra-ne-an. I guess it is a technique that can be applied in all vocabulary that you find hard to memorize.
